When $1 Provides 7 Meals, How Much Can YOU Give?

November 5, 2009

Did you snag your Starbucks this morning on the way to work?  Or run through the McDonald’s drive-thru?  How much did you spend?  {I know that coffee cost you at least $4!}

Did you know, that if you skipped ONE morning of your Starbucks run, you could provide 28 meals to hungry people?

In all of my 28 years, I do not remember a time when I was truly hungry.  Of course, I was hungry when I woke up in the morning, hungry at lunch and suppertime, hungry at times in-between, but never truly hungry.  Why?  Because I knew my next meal was just around the corner.

We didn’t have a lot growing up, but my Mother always made sure we did not go without a good meal.  We might have done without other things, but we always had food.  She scraped together every last cent to make sure we had breakfast, lunch, and a hot supper.  I was never truly hungry.

I honestly cannot imagine going hungry.  You have seen all of my baking day fun.  Obviously, I have plenty of food for our family, and then some.  My girls never go without.

Did you know that 500,000 Oklahomans are at-risk of going hungry every day?  EVERY DAY!

  • Oklahoma’s DHS reports that one in every three children in Oklahoma received food stamps for at least one month in the last year.
  • One in five Oklahoma children is at risk for hunger on a daily basis.
  • According to the Oklahoma Task Force on Hunger, the percentage of people classified as food insecure has risen from 13.4 percent to 14.6 percent.

I mean, these statistics hurt my heart!  Hungry children?  In our own country?  In our state?  This should not be happening.  We have enough to give; we have MORE than enough.

When you donate to the Regional Food Bank, every dollar you give provides 7 meals.  SEVEN MEALS.  {I actually had to look at that twice, just to make sure I read it right!}  So that means, if you gave up your Starbucks/McDonalds/whatever every day for a week, you could provide at least 196 meals.

Please consider helping needy families this holiday season.  Put some of that giving love toward filling bellies.  I promise, it will fill your heart.

Hi Amy,
I have recently happened upon your blog… great job. I am excited to find someone in my neck of the woods blogging. We are currently stationed at Ft. Sill. My teenage daughter and I have recently starting volunteering with the Food Bank here in Lawton. I can not tell you the blessing it has brought into our lives. Through my couponing I have been able to pass free or cheap items onto the food bank.
Hunger is not something that I have known nor has my family. I can not imagine what that feels like. It breaks my heart to know that there are people that go to bed hungry. I am amazed that $1.00 can provide 7 meals.
Thank you for posting this information.
