Frugal Easter Eggstravaganza

My childhood memories of Easter, aka Resurrection Sunday, mostly consist of candy and getting all dressed up for church. It was an event. Fun? Yes. Meaningful? Not really.

I was well into adulthood before I truly grasped what the glory of Easter is all about. Now as a parent myself, I struggle with balancing the over-commercialized candy fest and meaningful traditions.

My favorite season is Spring and all that comes with it.  Including Easter. A reason to celebrate our Savior’s Resurrection without the pressure of gifts.

Easter baskets, egg hunts, chocolate, jelly beans, bunnies and an elaborate feast. They may or may not be part of your family’s Easter activities.

How can we make Easter memorable and meaningful without breaking the bank?

I want to hear your ideas! Bloggers are welcome to join my Frugal Easter Eggstravaganza all week long.

But wait, there’s more! One lucky participant will be randomly selected to win a $50.00 Visa Gift Card to make your Easter a little easier on the budget.

One of the traditions i’ve done with my kids is jello eggs. They love them every year. And also we color eggs, but i use onion peel to color the eggs instead of the dies, they are too messy, but not the onion peel.

      Estera-
I love this idea! How do you use onion peels to dye eggs? I have never heard of this technique.

  2. Estera says

You boil eggs the normal way, the only thing you add onion peel at the same time you add the eggs (the peel does not have to be washed or anything and it does not have to be pretty), like a cup or more. I never measure i just peel as much as i have. And just boil the eggs normally. When they are done i put them on a paper towel to dry and that is it. Very easy and the dye does not come on your hands. The color will be a brownish color.

One thing we do is the Easter Bunny DOESN”T come on Easter. It usually comes after Easter. A few years ago the Easter Bunny wrote a letter to our girls and said he knew how busy their dad was (he is a pastor) and how he wanted them to celebrate the Risen Lord. The girls have never questioned while the EB doesn’t come on Easter.

One thing that I forgot to say is since the EB comes after Easter, I usually go shopping first thing in the morning after Easter. I have also used Valentine candy for their easter baskets. I am constantly looking for bargins all year long. I usually have a hard time deciding what to give from my stash.

I’ve found so many wonderful ideas here. Thanks.

I’m in charge of the annual Easter Egg Hunts for both sides of the family. Last year I found lots of Halloween candy for pennies on clearance at Target. I stuffed those plastic eggs with tiny bags of M&Ms, Skittles, Starburst and the like. The first Egg Hunt was last weekend. The kids loved getting “regular” candy, and it was much neater than having jelly beans or foil-wrapped eggs spill all over the place.

A lady at our church wrote a Family Lenten Devotional guide that is like the Jesse Tree for Christmas. We begin at the start of Lent Season. Each day we read from her devotional, read a passage of Scripture, sing a hymn, read a prayer and put an ornament on a vine wreath (or wooden cross). It begins with the birth of Christ and ends at his resurrection for 40 days. 40 ladies in our church each chose 1 ornament to make 40 of and we gathered together and swapped so we all had the entire set.

One of our favorite Easter Activities is to make chocolates together. We make rocky road by mixing jelly candies, marshmallows and melted dark chocolate. When it sets we cut it into squares and package it in cello bags tied with a ribbon. We then have a lovely homemade treat to give to family and friends at Easter. We also love making our own Easter board games. We made an Easter Tic Tac Toe with bunnies and eggs instead of O’s and X’s. Kids Easter Activities

Frugal Easter for us is going to church in new clothes, a frugal homemade Easter basket with some home made goodies and some store bought goodies and a delicious simple ham dinner with desert.
