Faith & Finance: Saving

The topic of saving as it relates to the Bible can be rather tricky. Perhaps that’s why this post has been weeks in the making.

If our heart is not in the right place, saving can so easily become hoarding. By first learning what God’s word teaches us about giving and stewardship, we can then keep saving in perspective.

There is desirable treasure,
And oil in the dwelling of the wise,
But a foolish man squanders it. ~ Proverbs 21:20

Saving has a purpose, a plan. Hoarding has neither.

Go to the ant, you sluggard!
Consider her ways and be wise,
Which, having no captain,
Overseer or ruler,
Provides her supplies in the summer,
And gathers her food in the harvest. ~ Proverbs 6:6-8

A Christian can save for the future and still give generously. One can save with a purpose, yet remain focused on God’s provision.

I remember years ago, the old me eagerly anticipating pay day and planning my expenditures. Often, my paycheck was spent within days of it hitting the bank account. The result was a life controlled by those circled days on the calendar. Saving for anything felt utterly impossible.

Now living on less than we make is newfound freedom. Saving for the future each month is not only possible, but an act of obedience. But that all had to start with a plan… a budget.

Very well said Alyssa and very true. So many times in my life I have done everything to keep my head above water and that life is NO WAY to live.

I do believe God wants us to live free, to lend and not borrow (that’s the hard part for me… thanks to credit cards). I find money is very enjoyable when used to honored God, yet very depressing when I don’t follow Gods ways.

I have a really hard time saving because I see so many needs and wonder why I should save my money.

My husband and I do NOT agree on saving lol.

This is how I feel: If I have an extra $50 and the church needs something, or my friends have an adoption fund; if I give to them then won’t God provide for me if the tire goes flat on the van?

I guess it’s just confusing because my gift is giving and I want to give it all, and believe that when I am in need He will provide and meet those needs.

    What do you think?

@Shasta Walton, I think God wants us to do both. His Word is very clear that we need to be generous, but we also need to have some funds set aside for the future.

I recommend having different accounts for different purposes. For example, you should have an emergency fund, and you can also have a “generosity fund”. That way, should a need arise, you will have the funds set aside for both.
