There is nothing worse than an unexpected home repair expense that could have been avoided.
My dear husband attempted to install a new faucet in our guest bath a couple of months ago. (We always try to do our own repairs to save money on home maintenance). Well, needless to say, it was not done, um, how should I say this… correctly? We discovered a leak under the sink that was just starting to create mold.
Two hours and several phone calls later, a very nice, very prompt and professional plumber was under the sink, repairing the damage poor hubby had done. I am thrilled to have a beautiful new working faucet in the bathroom, and no more mold!
After he completed the sink, this very nice plumber inspected our toilet at no extra charge, to make sure it was flushing properly (he had noticed my daughter’s flushable toddler wipes on the shelf). He gave it an extra thorough plunging, just to be sure that it was in working order.
Before leaving, he gave us some very helpful insight into his profession and how to save money on plumbing repairs:
“Plumbers make the majority of their money on customers who flush too much extra stuff down their toilets”. Huh? What about those nifty flushable wipes? And tampons? And those neat-o new flushable scrubbers?
“Nope. ONLY toilet paper should be flushed, and nothing else.”
By following this simple rule, you will almost never be calling a plumber for toilet related issues. Now, I am not intending to put plumbers out of business, but if I can share this information with my frugal friends, I most certainly will!

As newlyweds, we lived in a VERY OLD house and we couldn’t flush much at all because of the old plumbing with twists and turns and roots in the pipes.
When we had friends visit us for the weekend, four people’s toilet paper would have that toilet clogged by Sunday. We had to laugh it happened so often.
I had a little framed note on the back of the toilet warning all women to throw their tampons in the trash.
Yes, it’s gross but not as gross as the plumber having to come out and unclog them all over your backyard. Eewww.
One of the many plumbers who came out also told us to never use Charmin because it really clogs up the pipes.
But I love Charmin! And I always have Charmin coupons! sigh…
I was surprised by his advice since our house was built in 2002. But, he is the expert!

As a last reason to consider a professional plumber, think about the money you will save. The upfront costs may seem high, but when you take your time, trial and error as well as all the tools you need to buy into consideration, you will be surprised by the large amount you saved.

Plumbers who have been in business any length of time can and will give you references. If they cannot, or will not, then consider looking elsewhere. Talking with past customers is one of the best ways to accurately gage the quality of the plumber’s work.
