Back-to-School Saving Strategies

I have been stocking up on super cheap school supplies throughout the summer. It amazes me how little I have spent compared to years past just by doing simple research and comparison shopping well in advance.

The old way I shopped, as in last minute, is not so frugal. But when it comes to school clothes, I am trying something unthinkable this year. I am not buying any. Yet.

Last year, we made one big Kohl’s shopping expedition on tax-free weekend. Since we live in Texas, the warm weather tends to stretch far into the fall months. I bought clothing for both warm and cool weather. By the time the cooler weather finally rolled around, Sara had outgrown the clothes we selected in August. Talk about a frugal flop!

This year will be different. Stores at this time have the last of their summer rejects clothing on clearance. The rest is all “fall” merchandise at no-so-great prices. Long pants and long sleeves.

So I am waiting. Sales trends are seasonal. As soon as “winter” merchandise rolls in, that is when I will strike.

This strategy works well for those with warmer fall climates. So what about the rest of my frugal friends? I have rounded up a whole slew of back-to-school posts straight from my Google reader.

Thanks for linking my guest post!

I’m lucky in that our kids wear uniforms (private school) so the entire back-to-school clothes shopping chaos passes right by us.

    Smiles atcha!
