Review & Giveaway: Mrs. Meyer's Clean Home (now closed)

This week’s giveaway is a delightful new book. Last week on Keeping It Centsible, I gave away 2 copies to live listeners who called in with frugal tips.

Congratulations to Erin and Brooke!

Good news… I have 3 more copies to give away to my wonderful readers! I don’t normally review books, however I jumped at the chance to get my hands on this one.

Mrs. Meyers Clean Home: No-nonsense advice that will inspire you to CLEAN like the DICKENS

Great timing! With 8 weeks until baby’s arrival, my nesting instinct is in full swing! Many of you may also be tackling spring cleaning projects. This book has some very helpful tips for those dreadful yearly jobs.

Best of all, Mrs. Meyers is a frugal mom of 9 children. Many of her cleaning tips and tricks are simple, old-fashioned remedies like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice.

I love the way this book is laid out. The categories and room-by-room guides are perfect for busy moms. You can simply flip to the section you need the most.

Here is a little about the book from the publisher:

When Thelma Meyer tells it to you, she tells it straight: Clean the kitchen daily! Don’t waste anything (not even the water leftover from those potatoes you just boiled)! Always work hard!

Now for the first time, Thelma’s sage advice is being made available in this revolutionary cleaning guide chock full of practical tips and secrets based on the premise that life is hectic and messy. With shortcuts and tips for cleaning the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and living room, MRS. MEYER’S CLEAN HOME contains unexpected advice such as:

–Never use vinegar and water on wood floors. One part dish soap and four parts water is the only way to truly get them clean. And remember to buff with a terrycloth towel.

–Always clean out the fridge before grocery shopping. Serve the kids “Musko” (“must go”) for dinner, using the items that were fast approaching expiration.
–Wash windows on a cloudy day to avoid the nasty streaking that happens when the sun’s out and glass dry too fast.

MRS MEYER’S CLEAN HOME is two parts common sense and one part inspiration. Read it and learn how to clean like the dickens.

I truly don’t like to clean anything but the bathroom is the worse. I have 5 children and I just feel like I am in a losing battle.

  2. Andrea Mason says

I dread doing laundry! With 2 boys in sports, and my husband and I working full time and coaching, the laundry never seems to end! Oh, and did I mention we have our first daughter on the way? What’s a Mom to do?!

    Andrea

  3. Christina says

Does doing dishes count? Man, I HATE doing dishes. I miss having a dishwasher!

    I also hate washing floors.

  4. Rachel says

I hate cleaning the kitchen, more specific washing dishes. Once I have it clean, I need to cook again and the mess is right back. It’s my never ending battle.

  5. M Hendricks says

I dread folding laundry and putting it away. I’ll wash and dry it all day long, I just want a fairy to come and fold it!

  6. Heather says

I HATE scrubbing baths and showers. I swish and swipe the toilets almost every day and wipe down the counters as needed but the baths and showers? I hate cleaning them!

  7. The Googeg's says

I really hate cleaning the bathroom. Consequently, my children do most of the work there!

  11. Josie says

I also dread cleaning toilets, I do daycare in my home and I feel like I have to clean the toilet everytime a child leaves the bathroom.

  12. Debbie says

I hate to scrub my shower and tub. They are a separate small shower stall and garden tub. The tub is too deep the reach well and the shower is too small to clean the door well so it has to come off to clean it!

    I have subscribed. Thanks!

  13. Petula says

Very cool giveaway. I love books. 🙂 The cleaning task I dread the most is anything in the bathroom. It seems to get dirty so quickly – I guess that could be because five people use the same bathroom. 😀

  14. Pam says

you might as well as me my favorite cleaning chore..I don’t have one! I equally dislike them all. But if I have to pick it would be bathrooms!

  15. Sara says

I most hate washing dishes. All those nasty leftover bits of cold food… yuck! (Luckily my husband is my dish washer!)

  16. Lisa @ Stop and Smell the Chocolates says

Sounds like a wonderful book! If you feel like nesting your way over here, go right ahead – LOL! I don’t really like any cleaning, but I guess the bathroom is my least favorite.

  17. Wa Wa Waughs says

I think one of the most dreaded chores would have to be scooping the poop out of the kitty litter box!

  18. Jennifer says

I think my least favorite cleaning task is mopping. I don’t mind much else, but mopping drives me crazy.

  19. Kimber says

Cleaning the baseboards! We have beautiful white baseboards … which clearly show the dust that has been collecting there!

  20. Brendan Keller says

The spare bedroom/office/junkroom. Yes, all of that is one room. It seems like like everytime we clean the house we clean it by shoving everything into this room. I REALLY dread cleaning it one day. AUGH!

  21. JessW says

Ok, its not a big one but emptying the dishwasher. Ugh… I will fill it over and over but I so dislike emptying it! 🙂

  22. Anonymous says

I think that the chore that I hate the most is scrubbing the stove. It seems that no matter how often I clean it, it gets dirty almost immediately afterwards.

  23. Kellye says

The housecleaning chore that I absolutely despise is dusting. I hate it so I never do it and then it is so gross that I hate it even more!! HELP!

  24. Anonymous says

I hate cleaning showers/bathtubs…not so much because it’s disgusting but because it’s awkward and seems like a lot of chemicals to get it really clean. Anyway – not a big fan of folding laundry either but my husband is a lifesaver in that department 🙂 – mkolarcik@yahoo.com

I don’t like house work that much anyway but the bathroom is the one thing I dread!

Worst for me would be vacuuming the steps. Family of 5 with 2 shedding dogs it’s required often. I hate it!

I hate cleaning… but mostly mopping the kitchen floor. It is just such a pain…because I finally break down and do it…and then something gets spilled on it. UGH!

I am a subscriber through email… and then I come over and read! Thanks for being such a blessing in my life with your thoughts and writings.

I think I would have to say cleaning baseboards is the worse chore. However, once they are done, everything feels fresh and new.

  30. Reeves Manley says

i hate cleaning the bathroom almost as much as i hate washing dishes. i have found that if i clean the bathroom while my 18-month old is taking a bath, it is less in-tolerable, but still not any fun.

  31. savednsaving says

My most dreaded chore is laundry. Although, I don’t mind washing dirty clothess nearly as much as washing the clean ones that were gathered from the floor after having never been put away!

  32. Anonymous says

I’d say that cleaning most things lately has me turning green – literally. I’m 5 months pregnant and most cleaners make me absolutely ill due to the smell. Helpful hints on things from the best way to dust fans and remove cobwebs from the ceilings to how to clean my bathroom without harsh cleaners like Clorox would be incredibly helpful!

Sadly it seems our master bedroom is the room that gets cleaned the least. It’s a bit of a catch-all for everything from the house that doesn’t have a place. And it just collects dust because I forget to clean it. Thanks for the tips from the book!

I HATE anything in the kitchen. Not cooking, just cleaning. Putting dishes away, rinsing, especially unloading the dishwasher! 🙂

  36. Rete says

I hate mopping the kitchen floor. It’s such an ookey job… i realize avoiding it only makes it worse, though.

  37. lindy says

I dislike LAUNDRY!!! It’s not the 1st load, but the following loads that make me crazy!!! That’s why we should all do 1 load a day so as to keep on top of it!!

    Lindy

  38. Michelle Spahr says

I love to keep my house clean. Most of the time I don’t mind cleaning, but I do dread the shower! I do the toilet more than the shower!!!

  39. Robert says

It’s a tie…I hate folding laundry and I hate scrubbing all my pots and pans. Ugh. Thanks for the wonderful giveaway!

As a fairly new subscriber thank you for all of your tips. My husband and I are getting back into using coupons and love to see how much we have saved. But, then I have to come home and clean the bathroom. Yuck!

  41. Angie says

I can’t stand to fold and put away laundry. In fact, I have a huge pile of clean laundry waiting for me on the couch!

  42. Twinsmom says

Ugh, we have an elderly cat, and I absolutely hate cleaning the rug after she doesn’t quite make it to the potty. I love her to pieces, but I think someone needs to invent Depends for felines!

  43. ClarityPath says

I really hate mopping, especially because the linoleum in my apartment kitchen has annoying seams in the middle.

  44. Kristi says

For me, it’s the bathtub and shower. I can handle almost anything else with no problem as I actually love to clean, but the tub and shower just do me in. My husband usually chips in, but he tends to use a really strong cleaner that keeps us out of there for hours afterwards. And I’ve been looking for a resource exactly like this for awhile. I am currently pregnant with twins and in the hospital on bed rest, so I haven’t been able to do anything at home for a long while. I am looking forward to the mundane tasks once we get to come home 🙂

Mopping is the worst. I scrub too hard and my back and arms are sore by the end! After glancing at some comments, I was reminded how much I hate ironing as well. I need this book to inspire me! I am a clean freak at heart, but with 4 small children it is hard to keep up!

  46. Christie Stump says

Thanks for the giveaway! The cleaning chores I hate the most are putting away laundry and having to clean hair out of a drain! Gag me!

  47. Sara says

The task I hate the most would be washing dishes. I have 3 boys and no dishwasher and it feels like there are always dishes to be washed.

It all seems like a losing battle to me, but the dishes pile up worse than anything around here. I’d love to find some inspiration in this book! Thanks! m-sallen at juno dot com

I dread mopping the most. If all the supplies were ready I wouldn’t mind the actual mopping part. Thanks!

Cleaning the kitchen and vacuuming the hair off the bathroom floor are my least faves!
White countertops are beautiful when clean, but inevitably dirty 5 mins later.
And I’m convinced that every time I push the vacuum out of the bathroom, a hair falls out of my head on the way, just to spite me!
    Neverending tasks…

I dread cleaning the toilet—as a migraine sufferer for years the smell of a toilet clean or not makes me ill!

I can’t wait to read this book!
