“Love to play Sequence or golf, a card game”

 game-night

With cooler weather and shorter days upon us, our evening family trips to the park will become few and far between. So naturally, it is time to seek some frugal alternatives for family time.  A trip to the movies for this family of 6 is just not an option.

A night in with a favorite board game, snacks and a DVD is much more frugal; plus a great way to establish a family tradition.

To help families across the country make special memories, Walmart has teamed up with Hasbro and created Family Game Night Centers, perfect for helping you put together your own Family Game Night for under $40. Look for these special aisles now in your local Walmart.

Walmart challenged the ElevenMoms to create our very own theme night for $40 or less. Some ideas include:

  • Rock n’Roll Night—Turn your living room into a 50’s diner for Rock n’ Roll Night. The family could play include Twister, watch one of the two High School Musical movies, pull out those old tunes and serve diner themed foods like milk shakes and classic hot dogs.
  • Double Trouble Night—Turn family night into trouble fun by playing the infamous Trouble game and bending the rules such as eating with your fingers. Then relax around the TV to watch your favorite Pirates of the Caribbean movie and see how everyone’s favorite pirates get in and out of trouble
  • Special Mission Night—This night is about solving puzzle and using your smarts to uncover a mystery. Create or solve puzzles, play Pictureka and consider adding in a movie like National Treasure. Secret receipts of creative snacks might also be revealed!
  • Day of the Week Family Night Kit—For a Sweet Tooth Sunday: Candyland as well as the sugary sweet movie Pollyanna along soda and makings for a homemade ice cream sundaes.

The hard part will be agreeing on just one game! With both school-aged and preschool-aged children, this can be a challenge. Sara plays a mean game of Sorry, while I prefer Apples to Apples. My competitive hubby dominates any game of Scrabble, so I don’t even attempt to play that. Perhaps we will settle for the game of Life. 🙂

The best part is that once you invest $40 in these family game night supplies, you can use them again and again! And that is frugal.

One lucky reader will win a $40 Walmart Gift Card to create your own Family Game Night!  This is a quick, one day giveaway, so be sure to enter now.

With cooler weather we cant wait to make a big pot of chili and of course fritos and I make some hot apple cider and apple crisp for during the game. This is a fall tradition at our house then we get out the fall decorations and stuff the family scarecrow for the yard together we just use an old pair of oeralls and plaid shirt and put newspaper in the body and straw out his arms and legs and many years ago carved a styrofome pumpkin head with a big straw hat. he sits on the from porch for the season. then we all play a game together called hand and foot .It is a card game that takes 5 decks of cards and is a family favorite. My kids still come home from college for fall break just so we can have this family night of fun together. I am a feed subscriber and have posted this link on my facebook page as well thanks

Skip Bo is a family favorite because almost everyone (except the 2-year-old) can play. And we love playing BoomBlox on Wii together too.

  11. Kim says

We just did a family night last night, after dinner I made some microwave cooked apples and topped it with some oatmeal crunchies. Then we worked on a Disney puzzle all together. Its definitely a learning experience for me! I am such a crazy neatnick, I sorted all the pieces into piles by color. Then I had to NOT freak out when Rachael swept all the piles back together. I think I’m learning more from them than they do from me!!!

  12. Grace Dugas says

Our kids love it when we all make a big pallet on the living room floor and eat popcorn and watch a movie together. They say they love it when they can sleep with mom and dad.

Other games we love are monopoly and sequence.

My family LOVES game night we useally cook a nice dinner together, eat at the table, talk about our day, make plans for the weekend, and then we’ll play either Pictureka or Trouble. I like the idea of adding a theme movie!

  31. Tracy says

I found the “Family Edition” of Trivia Pursuit (at Goodwill for $3.99)…….there are a set of question cards for kids and another set for adults. On our family game night we make our own personal pizzas and play. The kids love playing it and don’t even realize they are learning at the same time.

  32. says

The boys are still young so family night hasn’t really gotten to the game phase quiet yet. What we do for family fun is drag out the baskets of Mega Blocks and we build. We build houses, skyscrapers, steps, whatever little hearts desire. Sometimes we simply build something up to be able to knock it down and watch it break apart.

Our family favorite is Yahtzee. My youngest two children are 9 and 11 so we can all play together and have a lot of fun trying to beat each other’s score.

  43. Kirsty says

My favorite family board game was “Sorry”. Remember that one? We would all sit around the table playing this game on Saturday nights for hours. After having a great dinner that mom made us. My younger brother and I would just love to yell out SORRY!!!!! To my dad who usually was the one that lost while playing the game.

  44. Holly R. says

We’ve had game night since my daughter was 2 and she’s now 16 and we still do it. We take turns picking games, so everyone gets to pick their favorites. We all usually help make dinner, whoever picks the game, gets to choose what’s for dinner. I love game night!!!! I’d love to have some new games ;^)

  45. sspence says

Our favorite family game night always consists of UNO and puzzles. I have a 6 and a 2 year old. This seems to be a good combination of games for us!

  46. Justine says

I’m a big fan of Phase 10. Now they have a dice version, but I prefer the original card game.
I also really like family reading nights – sometimes we all read separate books in the same room, or sometimes we read a book (or series, like Chronicles of Narnia) together, taking turns reading out loud.

  47. Cindy says

Our favorite game right now (small kids) is Captain Bones’ Treasure Chest. Awesome game for young ones.

  48. kirsten says

My favorite board game memory from childhood was a game (I don’t recall the name) but it had obscure words that you either had to know the meaning of or you made up different meanings to trick your opponents. One time my brother made up a meaning for blenaphobia (which I think meant fear of blending into your surroundings) his was much more shocking: fear of having one’s hand stuck in a blender. My father always ended up in fits of laughter!

  49. says

Can’t beat a good game of Uno–any number can play and you never know which family member is going to have to draw half the stack while the rest of us laugh in shear delight!

  50. Wendy Cameron says

My son’s finally old enough for Candy Land and Chutes N Ladders, but we love doing puzzles even more.
