Faith & Finance: Pursue Knowledge

Last week, I announced a new weekly feature here on KingdomFirstMom.com. This is week two in our topic of Faith & Finance.
bible

For many years, I avoided learning about finance. Although I started collecting a paycheck regularly at a very young age, I failed to actually learn what to do with it. So basically, I spent it without much thought.

Years later, married and up to our eyeballs in debt, we knew something major had to change. We sought help. Our finances had become unmanageable. No, we did not buy any books or attend a seminar. But we did meet with a kind volunteer from our church who was willing to counsel us.

We nervously attended that first meeting fully expecting a stern lecture and a stack of reading material. Instead, we were met with grace. The counselor was not there to judge us. But we did have a reading assigment- God’s Word.

Yes, the very first place he led us to if we were going to learn about money was The Bible.

Before you turn to a TV personality or a self-help book about money, go straight to His Word for Biblical financial knowledge. And do not be afraid to seek help.

Buy the truth and do not sell it; get wisdom, discipline and understanding (Proverbs 23:23)

Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed (Proverbs 15:22)

This is so true, Alyssa. I don’t think that many people really realize how important finances are until they’re backed into a corner. A friend was recently talking about having filed for bankruptcy. My first question was, what are you going to do to insure that you don’t end up back at that point again? Many people say that they would be ok if all of their debt were suddenly erased, but it’s our lifestyles and choices that get us into that debt in the first place! Without changes on our part, we would end up going back down that same road.

Excellent post… perfect scriptures to use. Although it’s been some time since I read about finances and money in the Bible when I did read it it was after I had read other books. Thanks for the reminder.

Many people are surprised to see how much the bible has to say about wealth and finances. God gives specific direction on many topics, and principles that we can apply to everything.
