How to Snag Great Jewelry on a Budget

February 16, 2010

http://www.flickr.com/photos/28481088@N00/I am a jewelry freak. {And I’m proud of it!}

I love jewelry; it makes me happy. I could spend all day looking for jewelry and be happy as a lark.

The problem? Jewelry costs money. {Ugh… if only the finer things in life were free… KIDDING!}

So, how do you feed a jewelry addiction without breaking the bank? See what works for me

  • Shop the sales. I found a fantastic pair of earrings at Old Navy for $1.24! Seriously!
  • Check out yard sales and thrift stores. You never know what treasures you will unearth for mere pennies. {Psst… Jen at Balancing Beauty and Bedlam has this down pat! Go visit her!}
  • Speaking of treasures, I love Etsy shops. One of my favorites is The Rusted Chain, where you won’t find rusted chains, but really beautiful and meaningful pieces, at prices you can afford.
  • Raid your mother’s (or grandmother’s) jewelry box. You could be sporting a true vintage piece {think awesome brooch!}.
  • Not much of a jewelry person, but like that extra bit of “oomph”? Splurge on one fantastic piece: necklace/pendant, watch, bracelet, ring, whatever. Make sure it is classic and wear it with everything to make it YOUR signature piece.

What are your ideas for finding jewelry on the cheap?

I agree, ESTY is the best. I have always been impressed by the quality and prices you see there.

I am just getting into the whole jewelry thing. I have a gift certificate to Novica.com, and I was looking at the jewelry forever yesterday. Maybe I should hire you as my personal shopper!

Well, Miss Katie, I would love to be your personal shopper :) Why don’t you just move to north Texas/southern Oklahoma so we can be neighbors and shop together!?!?

If you ever find yourself near a Charming Charlies, you MUST GO! If you like jewelry a little, you will love this place. If you like jewelry a lot, you might cry the first time you walk in the door. Everything is arranged by color, all of the pieces are beautiful and affordable. You will LOVE IT!

One thing I like to do is share jewellery! I have some that doesn’t appeal to me anymore, and friends do the same and then we trade! I get some new-to-me jewellery, and so do they. :) Win-win!

I have a classic style and I completely agree with the “splurge on one expensive piece” suggestion. Over the years (with a few gifts thrown in!), I’ve accumulated a few diamond and pearl pieces all with the white gold accents to match my wedding ring. It makes my jewelry choices easy, they always coordinate with my clothes, and they all look good together!

When I added the “splurge” tip, I was thinking of the pearl necklace my mother-in-law gave me the day before my wedding. Pearls are such a classic, yet elegant piece that I wear with everything… even jeans and a tee! I believe it is wise to invest in a few nice pieces for those special times, and to dress up the “every day” look! Thank you for sharing, Mary Beth!
