Wrapping Paper Storage: A Frugal Alternative

Christmas is over, and it is officially a NEW year. I don’t know about you, but I went nuts shopping some of the after-Christmas sales and snagged super-cheap wrapping paper. I was really excited until I got home and needed a place to store it for the next year. (Oops!)

Luckily, the last time I was at Sam’s Club, I snagged an empty wine box from one of the bins of boxes. Frugality to the rescue! (When I saw the box, I just knew I would fine some use for it… and yay! I have!)

I have always wanted a wrapping paper storage container, but I was not about to pay $20 for one (or any amount, really!). The wine box is perfect, because it keeps them neatly separated, AND is really sturdy. It fits perfectly in any closet or any small space, because it measures about 10″ x 14″.

I store my wrapping paper in my closet, so I’m not going to make the box “pretty” right now. But, if you keep your paper where it will be seen, you can cover the box with scrapbooking paper, material, whatever. I will cover it one day just to make it cute, but for now, it is just a wine box (that cost me nothing!).

If you do not have a warehouse club near you, and you would like to have your own wrapping-paper-wine-box, (and you don’t drink wine by the case!), check out a local grocer or store to see if they have an empty wine box, or have them save you one.

What other items would you store in a wine box?

Great idea!! I can’t stand to go to the closet and all my wrapping paper fall out on me. Now I just have to find a wine box. This may be a challenge since I live in a dry county. 🙂

Great idea. I would also need one for the top as a cover. That way I could stack things on top that weren’t too heavy.
You could also use it to store crystal that isn’t used all that often. I think it would work for champagne flutes or maybe pilsner glasses.

This looks like it will work really well to keep the rolls organized. You might also want to cover the tops with an old sheet, garbage bag etc. to keep the dust off of the rolls. I know that they are already wrapped in plastic but it will keep you from having to dust them off come December.

Some other ideas for storing wrapping paper:
    1. You can slide one roll down each leg of a pair of pantyhose and hang them over a coat hanger in the closet. You could probably fit about 3 or 4 pairs on a hanger.
    2. I personally store my wrapping paper, tape, ribbon, tags, and boxes in my husband’s old garment bag. Most wrapping papers fit just right into it and then I can place the other items in front or behind the rolls.

What would I store in the box? Wine, of course! HA!
I like this idea! How many rolls will it hold? I keep mine in the garage in an old Lava Lamp box. It takes up less floor space at 6.5″ x 6.5″ AND it is taller than a winebox at 19″, so it is very stable for the 10-12 rolls it holds. I have regular size rolls (paper towel size tubes), not the big ones (4″-5″ diameter).

As far as prettying it up, you might take some of that clearance wrap and wrap the wine box! I like Shymom’s idea to put a sheet over it to keep dust out. I am racking my brain to come up with something else to put in the boxes and the only thing I can think of is some of the coffee mugs from my collection that I don’t use very often but don’t want to get rid of. I would need to cut small squares to put between the mugs as they stacked. This would be a great tool to use if/when you move for all your glasses, mugs, pitchers, etc.

This is a great idea. I am going to try this one. I have rolls of wrapping paper in closet and they are a mess. This would solve the problem. Thanks for the idea.

I love this find! But I’ve gotta let you in on a fantastic secret I heard this year: to simplify life even further, choose to wrap all presents in either brown or creamy-white paper. One roll. For all gifts. You’ll need three good-quality ribbons to dress it up for any occasion: white, red, and black. That will minimize your needed storage space so that you can actually store some wine in that box! 🙂
