Teaching a Lefty to Write When You Are a Righty {Ask the Readers}

I am a righty.

Shane is a righty.

Abby Grace and Reese are righties as well.

That makes it fairly easy for this homeschool momma to teach her girls to write.

Enter in Meleah.

Now, she is only 27 months old, but she is definitely a lefty. Every time she uses a pencil or crayon or whatever, she uses her left hand.

I have already started practicing the “proper” way to hold a pencil with my left hand so that I can teach her when the time comes.

And, in the future, I do want her to be comfortable writing with both hands (so, right-hand instructions will come!).

But, my question to you is,

Are any of you a righty and have taught a lefty? Or vice versa? How did teaching a child who writes the opposite of you work out?

    I don’t have any advice, but I just had to say……I am so glad you embrace your Lefty! My sister is a lefty, and when she was little and learning to write, her teacher made her feel like she was doing it ‘wrong’ and tried to force her to write with her right (wrong) hand!

      Hey girl! Thanks for that 🙂 I remember a few of my friends who were lefty’s and the teacher just didn’t know what to do with them! I do eventually want her to try to learn with both hands (I wish I could do that!), but I definitely want her “original” or “right” hand established before I really push anything else too hard. 🙂

      Did you happen to receive an email from me the in the last few weeks? It might have gone to your spam folder, but you won one of the Hefty coupons. I was just making sure your mailing address was the same before I sent it to you. Just let me know. Hope you are doing well!

    I am right handed, but my youngest is left handed. I tried writing with my left hand for a week to see what challenges she faced. It was a good exercise. I learnt that pencil always smudges so you need to turn your book/paper at an angle. Also conventional handwriting techniques may not be best for left handers. I found great resources at http://www.leftys.com.au (it is an Australian site).

      Rachel, that is a great idea. I’ve never thought about attempting to write left-handed. I have a few friends who are left-handed and I’ve watched them. It is soooo different! Thank you for the link. I will be sure to check it out!
