The holiday season is beginning, and for many, it is a happy time with family and friends.

For others, though, the holiday season is a sad reminder of loss… For some, this will be their first holiday season without their spouse; or possibly a parent, sibling, child, or grandparent.

Some are missing a family member who is bravely serving our country overseas, but is unable to come home, and will instead celebrate the holidays overseas.

Still others could be happily serving as missionaries in a foreign country, honoring their call by God, but missing their families here at home.

The Bible says to, “visit orphans and widows in their affliction,” and while that means we, as the Body of Christ should always do this, it also means to “help those in their time of need.”

So, what can we do?

For those serving in some way overseas, a note of encouragement can go a long way.  So can a care package (for missionary families, make sure you check with their family or sending company such as IMB for regulations and more information).

And those who remain here? Whether they are missing a family member who is serving overseas, or missing a loved one who has passed away, there are many ways we can help out.

:: Make a meal and deliver it.
:: Send a note or card of encouragement.
:: Offer to babysit for a few hours so a mother can get a few things done, run errands, or just take a break.
:: Invite them over for a meal at your home.
:: Offer to run errands for them.
:: Meet up for a quick cup of coffee (or just have coffee at your home).
:: Give ’em a hug. Just let them know you care.

While we are on the subject of caring, please be careful with your words. Even the most well-intentioned “comfort” words can be the wrong thing to say.  When you are dealing with someone who as lost a loved one, you canNOT understand… so don’t say you do (unless you actually have lost your spouse or mother or child or whomever). Sometimes, a hug and a listening ear will go much further than anything you can ever say.

What ways can you think of to help those who might be having a less-than-happy holiday season?

Amazing that you should post this today Amy. This is the 9th anniversary of the death of my cousin Amy’s, cousin, Brian. He was killed in an auto accident on 11/23/00. Both Amy and Brian’s mother are missing him immensely today. Thank you for this post.
