Late night conversations…

My three-year-old daughter started Tuesday out with a bang… and a fever. The fever continued through the day, with no other symptoms. I put her to bed with some Motrin and her dolls.

She woke up at 2 am burning up, so we went into the kitchen to get more fever reducer. In the 5 minutes it took to do this, she became wide awake.

Here are some of her statements that followed:

DD – “Mommy, I love you.”

DD – “Mommy, I was so sleepy after that movie, but I’m not sleepy now!”

DD – “Mommy, can I play Paint (aka DoodleBuddy) on your iPhone?”

Me {possibly said with a teeny bit of desperation} – “Sweetie, aren’t you sleepy? Don’t you want to close your eyes and go back to sleep?”

DD, rubbing my cheek ever-so-gently, “No Mommy. I’m not tired.”

DD – “Mommy, I’m thirsty.” I hand her a drink of water. “Thank you, Mommy. You are so pretty.”

Me – “Thank you, baby. Now, aren’t you ready to go back to sleep?”

DD – “Mommy, can I play Paint on your iPhone? Please-oh-please?”

Me – “Sweetie, it is the middle of the night. The iPhone doesn’t work right now. Let’s go to sleep.”

DD – “So, can I play Paint in the morning?”

The conversation went this way for ONE-AND-A-HALF-HOURS. But, she was laying next to me and talking in this sweet little voice… how could I resist those precious moments?

Even though I was exhausted, I drank in that time with my sweet girl. She is growing up so fast, and I want to enjoy and savor every moment.

Even if they come at 2am.

Thanks for the precious reminder! I cuddle/rock my just-turned-3-years-old-on-yesterday little girl to sleep every night and some nights she is out in minutes and some nights it takes a LOOONNGG time…especially when mommy has been up way early and is exhausted. I try very hard to savor her sweetness in my arms because in a very short time, it will be over. I have older children too and I know how quick it goes.

That is so sweet, I can’t even remember how many times I’ve been up throught the night with one of my little ones (or big ones now) and instead of being mad and tired, I tried to look at it the same way you described, as a time to enjoy and appreciate their sweetness!
Thanks for reminding me of just that. 🙂
