A “Big Girl” Bed

It has been a week of milestones here at our house.

Meleah, who is 3 today, has begun sleeping in a real bed, as opposed to her beloved crib.

She has, by far, lasted longer in the crib than her sisters, even becoming so attached to it that she wanted nothing to do with the “other” bed that was in her room.

I recently did a bit of rearranging in her room, and added a nice, sturdy bed rail to the “other” bed, just to see if I would get a reaction.

Meleah before her first night sleeping in her "big girl" bed.

That night, she decided she wanted to try her new bed.

Shane and I didn’t think she would last long, and would want to go back in her crib.

She didn’t.

After she had been in her room for about 30 minutes, I checked on her, and she was sound asleep. Even then, I wondered if she would stay in her bed, wonder into our room in the middle of the night, or wake up confused.

Sound asleep

Nothing.

She slept all night long, as usual, only waking a bit at 6:30 to ask for supper. I guess she was dreaming. I patted her and let her know she could have supper later. She did not wake up until 9 am, when I had to drag her out of bed so we could make an appointment.

I started thinking that bed had magical powers.

Good morning!

The magical powers must have been drained that first night, because she woke up the second morning at 7! No complaining here, though, because she is loving her new bed, and we can move the crib out so she can have a lot more play space.

And while I am so proud of her, and love watching her grow and learn, a part of me is sad that she is pushing much of her “babyness” behind her.

Now, if she will only give up the diapers…
